SKINWELL is the brainchild of CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC and MARTIN DUMAIS (Aun). Powerdrones for tunnels and hidden places, strong transmissions from an undefinable place. It is the first live set ever of this evolutionary collaboration. (More details on the cd below!!)

Playing for the first time in Montreal, this notorious project founded by KEVIN DOHERTY has garnered a fair share of attention from both dark-ambient and experimental fans. His peculiar brand of isolationist and evocative ambient often uses non standard sound sources (for example, a broken heating device, as documented on the DEAD WEATHER MACHINE cd). We are very pleased to have SRF on board for UNSOUND volume one.

VISIONS was conceived by Frederic Arbour (Instincts, Cyclic Law, Longing For Dawn, Twilight Foundation) as a vehicle to explore new sonic spatial realms of a darker nature. He has released LAPSE (cd, Cyclic Law, 2005) and CELESTIAL SPHERE (10’’, AngleRec, 2006) to document the impressions of his journeys and a new Cd album is coming down the pipe. This is the ideal time to discover or re-discover the nice, expansive and crushing textures of VISIONS’ very unique sound.

UNSOUND MTL is the Canadian chapter of UNSOUND NYC. Established in october 2008, UNSOUND MTL is an organisation dedicated to bringing the best in live underground music to the stage in Montreal. Spanning a range of obscure sounds from dark ambient, industrial noise and power electronics to doom, drone and post metal, we will be hosting a diverse cross section of some of today's most challenging artists. Currently curated by two independent experimental music labels, ANNIHILVS POWER ELECTRONIX and THTFL in NY, and by AUN and KALI, CYCLIC LAW and ANGLE.REC in Montreal. With over a decade of collective experience organising and promoting live events UNSOUND seeks to make a lasting impact on the underground scene. Doors cleverly concealed…unexplored abandoned industrial sites….the angleREC and Mondes Elliptiques labels had the opportunity to work with many sound artists whose explorations are accompanied by a will to uncover on the field, in the abstract as well as in the concrete, different mysteries or secrets, or at least, to probe the enclave, the place they haunt. The SKINWELL project is no exception; its two protagonists, CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC and MARTIN DUMAIS, concoct music for TUNNELS, those places, where, at the end, one is beginning to see the light, as the old proverb says, but in the present case, we do not really care; we can see the light in the distance, it also penetrates different interstices or fissures along the walls of the tunnels where we progress, but we prefer taking the time to pace the premises, to permeate ourselves with the sound echoes with which they fill our ears and head, and it should be mentioned that the ambient-drone styling embraced by SKINWELL contains, like the music of some well-know artists of the genre (here we shall name CRANIOCLAST, TROUM or ZOVIET FRANCE with the unique goal of giving people a better idea as to where they are on the map of sonorities), a whole assortment of subtle electronic pulsations, concocted here by CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC, which always adequately support the sound fabrics woven by MARTIN DUMAIS, and which also are their starting point. One only has to imagine a minimal tech project gone the drone-ocean way …pulsations are there, always, but tinged with a sonic fog that is heavy, damp and fluid at the same time and which always suggests, in the end, uncertain twists and turns in this crossing of tunnels. But who would complain?

SKINWELL represents the first musical project on disc involving CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC. On TUNNELS, with MARTIN DUMAIS he seals an alliance of the most fruitful nature, whose initial results gained, right at the beginning, general consensus among fans of ambient-noise and drone looking for new sensations. For his part, MARTIN DUMAIS has been part of Montreal’s electronic and exploratory music scenes for the last 20 years. He mainly gained attention with his ODDS industrial project towards the end of the 80s, his techno ventures JUICEBOX (with Marc Leclair aka AKUFEN) and LES JARDINIERS, and finally his current psych-drone project, AUN (with three CDS on ORAL in Montreal and one on CRUCIAL BLAST in the United States).

Nous sommes vraiment ravis de compter sur la participation de SRF au premier chapitre de UNSOUND MTL.

À propos d’UNSOUND MTL
UNSOUND MTL est le chapitre canadien d’UNSOUND NYC. Créé en octobre 2008, UNSOUND MTL s’est donné pour mission de présenter sur les scènes montréalaises le meilleur de la musique underground. Nous privilégierons une vaste gamme de sonorités obscures allant du dark-ambient et de la musique bruitiste industrielle au power-electronics en passant par le doom, le drone et le post-métal. Dans cette optique, les artistes invités proviendront d’horizons variés et compteront parmi les plus innovateurs de notre temps. Portes habilement dérobées à la vue, friches industrielles inexplorées….les labels angleREC et Mondes Elliptiques ont eu le bonheur de travailler avec plusieurs artistes du son dont les explorations s’accompagnent d’une volonté de percer, sur le terrain, dans l’abstrait comme dans le concret, différents mystères ou secrets, ou du moins, de sonder l’enclave, le lieu qu’ils hantent. Le projet SKINWELL ne fait pas exception; ses deux protagonistes, CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC et MARTIN DUMAIS, concoctent une musique pour TUNNELS, ces lieux au bout desquels on finit, comme le dit le vieux proverbe, par voir la lumière, mais dans le cas présent, cela nous importe peu; la lumière, on la devine au loin, elle se fait jour aussi par différents interstices ou fissures jalonnant les parois des tunnels où l’on progresse, mais on préfère prendre le temps de bien arpenter les lieux, de s’imprégner des échos sonores dont ils nous emplissent les oreilles et la tête, et il convient de préciser que l’ambiant-drone pratiqué par SKINWELL recèle, à l’instar de certains artistes bien connus du genre (nous citerons ici CRANIOCLAST, TROUM ou encore ZOVIET FRANCE dans l’unique but de situer un peu les gens dans la cartographie des sonorités), tout un assortiment de subtiles pulsations électroniques, concoctées ici par CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC, qui appuient toujours judicieusement les nappes sonores tissées par MARTIN DUMAIS, et en constituent en outre le point de départ. Il suffit d’imaginer un projet de tech-minimal qui aurait décidé de se laisser dériver vers un océan de drones…les pulsations sont là, toujours, mais imprégnées d’un brouillard sonore lourd, humide et fluide à la fois qui laisse toujours, au final, présager des détours incertains dans cette traversée de tunnels. Mais qui s’en plaindra?

SKINWELL représente le premier projet musical sur disque auquel participe CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC. Sur TUNNELS, il scelle avec MARTIN DUMAIS une alliance des plus fructueuses, dont les résultats initiaux ont obtenu dès la première heure le consensus général parmi les mordus d’ambiant-noise et drone à la recherche de nouvelles sensations. MARTIN DUMAIS fait pour sa part partie du panorama des musiques électroniques et exploratoires montréalaises des 20 dernières années. Il s’est illustré notamment avec son projet industriel ODDS à la fin des années 80, ses aventures plus techno JUICEBOX (aux côtés de Marc Leclair, alias AKUFEN) et LES JARDINIERS et finalement son projet actuel psych-drone AUN (avec notamment trois CD chez ORAL à Montréal et un sous CRUCIAL BLAST aux États Unis).

Comment s'est déroulée la soirée? Malheureusement, je n'ai pu y assister, mon budget ne permet pas trop les déplacements hors de la ville.

c'était nickel! belle petite soirée de drone et de dark-ambient, juste assez de monde. des projections adéquates pour chacun des 3 projets...on fait le UNSOUND II le 28 mars !
