Project from Vancouver founded by Harlow MacFarlane, its only member. SISTRENATUS just released, on the high-profile British label COLD SPRING, its first album, a cd entitled DIVISION ONE, which announces a promising future for the project. SISTRENATUS, which could be linked to a dark ambient or 'martial' (that is percussive and hammered) aesthetics, indeed revisits ambiances often proposed by renowned labels such as COLD MEAT INDUSTRY, with a touch that is very high-tech and sharp as a razorblade. The contrast here is resolutely affirmed between the calmer passages and the sound eruptions, often akin to 'japnoise' or present noise music in short. A music that is in constant movement and hearty!

Martin Dumais has been around in the Montreal scene for a very long time now. Let us mention, among others, his legendary ODDS project, in the experimental/industrial field, in 1990 (an enriched and re-tooled version of ODDS' music released that year is to be re-released in 2008 on Montreal label .ANGLE.REC.). After hitting it big and hard in a more techno and house vein with LES JARDINIERS or JUICEBOX, Martin Dumais disappeared for a few years…to come back recently with AUN; drones that are mainly based on the sound of guitar, deconstructed, saturated, and showing a unique inventiveness and richness, as evidenced on his 3 cds released on the ORAL label in Montreal (Mule, Blackhorse, Whitehorse). Martin has more than one trick/surprise up his sleeve and he'll show it to us on October 3!

Founder of the CYCLIC LAW label in Montreal, Frederic Arbour also devotes time, of course, to music itself, with his doom-metal band, LONGING FOR DAWN, or VISIONS, his personal project, which presents a peculiar 'vision' of obscure ambient music. References to classic dark-ambient sonorities as popularized by labels such as COLD MEAT INDUSTRY or LOKI, are obvious, but VISIONS integrates many elements of ''space ambient'' and psychedelia in his music. A certain part of the sound elements is brought in or integrated in an instinctive fashion, which gives an even more organic feel to the lush deepness of VISIONS' approach towards sound. An enveloping dark ambient sound transcending the genre itself. VISIONS released the LAPSE CD on CYCLIC LAW and the 10inch vinyl CELESTIAL SPHERE on .ANGLE.REC.

Alexandre Scarfone likes to approach, in an iconoclast fashion, the various styles (or non-styles) of music which he dabbles with. Once upon time, one could hear him work in the field of harsh industrial music. With his GRKZGL project, he gradually slowed down the tempo, moved to more abstract and evanescent sound concerns, but ones that are nonetheless rich and saturated. His ESQUE mini-cd released last year on .ANGLE.REC. documents a part of that pivotal period. His recent productions, namely the ANTITULE mini-cd as well as the GARKZISTAN series created in collaboration with WAPSTAN (BRISE CUL Records) really show us GRKZGL'S interest in dronier things with a slight touch of bruitism. GRKZGL'S arsenal is varied: multiple modules contact mikes, tape loops…Classy as hell!

Projet de Vancouver fondé par Harlow MacFarlane, SISTRENATUS vient tout juste de faire paraître, sur la prestigieuse étiquette britannique COLD SPRING, son premier album, un cd annonciateur d’un brillant avenir, du nom de DIVISION ONE. SISTRENATUS, qu’on pourrait associer à une esthétique dark-ambient et ‘martiale’ (c'est-à-dire percussive et martelée), revisite en effet les ambiances souvent proposées par des étiquettes comme COLD MEAT INDUSTRY, avec une touche très high-tech et cinglante comme une lame de rasoir. Le contraste est ici très marqué entre les passages plus calmes et les éruptions sonores, souvent proches du japnoise ou du noise actuel tout court. Une musique en constant mouvement et bien nourrie!

Martin Dumais est actif dans la scène montréalaise depuis fort longtemps.
On se souviendra notamment de son légendaire projet expé/indus ODDS, apparu en 1990 (réédition enrichie et revampée de la musique de ODDS parue cette année-là, à venir en 2008 sous étiquette montréalaise .ANGLE.REC.). Après avoir fait un tabac dans les musiques plus techno et house avec les projets LES JARDINIERS ou JUICEBOX, Martin Dumais a gardé le silence quelques années…pour nous revenir récemment avec son projet AUN; des drones à base, surtout, de guitare, déconstruits, saturés, et d’une inventivité et d’une richesse marquées, comme en témoignent ses 3 cd parus sous étiquette montréalaise ORAL (Mule, Blackhorse, Whitehorse). Martin a plus d’un tour/d’une surprise dans son sac et nous le démontrera le 3 octobre!

Fondateur de l’étiquette montréalaise CYCLIC LAW, Frédéric Arbour s’adonne aussi, bien sûr, à la musique, avec son groupe doom-métal LONGING FOR DAWN et VISIONS, son projet perso, qui présente une vision singulière de la musique ambiante obscure. Les références aux sonorités dark-ambient classiques, telles que popularisées par les étiquettes COLD MEAT INDUSTRY ou LOKI, sont manifestes, mais VISIONS intègre plusieurs éléments de ‘’space ambient’’ et de psychédélisme dans sa musique. Une certaine partie des éléments sonores sont amenés ou intégrés instinctivement, ce qui confère un côté encore plus organique aux luxuriantes profondeurs évoquées par l’approche sonore de VISIONS. Un dark-ambient enveloppant qui va au delà du genre même. VISIONS a fait paraître le cd LAPSE sur CYCLIC LAW et le 10pouces vinyle CELESTIAL SPHERE sur .ANGLE.REC.

Alexandre Scarfone aime bien aborder en iconoclaste les styles (ou non-styles) musicaux auxquels il touche. On l’a entendu autrefois œuvrer, à sa façon, dans les musiques industrielles dures. Avec son projet GRKZGL, il a graduellement ralenti le tempo, est passé à des préoccupations sonores plus abstraites et évanescentes, mais néanmoins riches et saturées. Son mini-cd ESQUE paru l’an dernier sous étiquette .ANGLE.REC. témoigne d’une portion de cette période charnière et déterminante. Ses productions récentes, notamment le mini-cd ANTITULÉ ainsi que la série GARKZISTAN créée en collaboration avec WAPSTAN (disques BRISE-CUL), nous font vraiment découvrir l’intérêt de GRKZGL pour les trucs plus drone avec une légère touche de bruitisme. L’arsenal de GRKZGL est varié; multiples modules, micros contact, bandes bouclées… De la grande classe!
